BASKETBALL

The North Omaha B.E.A.R.S. Program has basketball teams ranging in age from 7 to 18. The basketball program is divided into two operations. There is the youth division, for boys and girls between the ages of 7 to 14, and the high school division, for boys in the 9th through 12th grades.

The North Omaha B.E.A.R.S. Program has fielded youth basketball teams since 1992, under the leadership of Robert Faulkner and Alonzo "Mitch" Mitchell. Robert Faulkner has been the coordinator of the high school all-stars since 1994. "Mitch" has coordinated the youth program for the B.E.A.R.S., and has also assisted with the coaching of the high school all-stars. There have been numerous team and tournament championships in city league youth divisions. The high school all-stars have been very competitive nationally over the past six years, winning the Las Vegas National Grand Finale consolation championship in 1997.

Many former North Omaha B.E.A.R.S. members have gone on to play Division I basketball, Division II basketball, and small-college basketball. Some of those players are Alvin Mitchell (University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the University of Cincinnati), Will Perkins (University of Washington), Donnie Johnson (Creighton University), Adam Tait (University of Nebraska-Omaha), Mike Kuhn (Hampton University).
