Bears hang on to top Wichita
BY CHRIS HARRINGTON

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Saturday was a busy day for Nebraska Bears coach Don Moore. His football team had its home opener, and his wife was occupied with handling funeral arrangements and selling dinners.

The Wichita Aviators didn't make his day any easier, giving his Bears a run for their money before the Bears pulled out a 41-40 victory by blocking an extra point in the fourth quarter.

The Bears (2-1) dominated the first half against the Aviators (0-3) before about 2,000 fans at the Mid-American Center in Council Bluffs.

After Wichita took a 7-6 lead early in the first quarter, the Bears scored 26 consecutive points before going into halftime up 32-14.

"We played well offensively during the first half," Moore said, "but we got a little off-focused and lacked on production defensively in the second half."

The Bears also were lacking at times on special teams. Place-kicker Mike Parks was 1 for 3 on extra points and 0 for 1 on field goals in the first half.

Wichita quarterback John Wise helped his team gain back the momentum in the second half, leading two touchdown drives in the third quarter that cut the Bears' lead to 32-27.

"Our game plan stayed the same from first to second half," Wichita coach Carl Caldwell said. "We had the motivation swinging our way, and our receivers stepped up and caught the ball for our football team."

The Bears widened their lead to 35-27 on a 40-yard field goal by Parks, then recovered a fumble on the kickoff inside the Aviators' 20-yard line. Elijah Simmons eventually scored on a 2-yard run, putting the Bears ahead 41-27.

Still, Wise battled back for the Aviators and hooked up with Donald Payne on a touchdown pass with 61/2 minutes left to pull the Aviators within one. But then the Bears blocked the extra point and recovered the onside kick.

"We did survive the game," Moore said. "Even though it was by one point, a win is still a win."

B.E.A.R.S. punish Minutemen, win 59-39

Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. running back
Anthony Lee scores one of his
four touchdowns against the Minutemen.
Sedalia, MO. -- The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. took out their frustrations Saturday night against the Missouri Minutemen. Fresh off a near-upset of the never-beaten Kansas Koyotes, the B.E.A.R.S. showed up to play and pounded a Minutemen team, 59-39.

The B.E.A.R.S. led from bell to bell in this contest, jumping out to a 31-6 halftime lead. Offensively, the B.E.A.R.S. offensive line punished the Minutemen defense all night long. Anthony Lee ran for 4 touchdowns, while Troy Travis and Elijah Simmons each scored one apiece. Travis also threw one touchdown to Tommie Williams on a beautiful play action fake.

Defensively, the B.E.A.R.S. were led once again by "the Big Show", Lamain Rucker and the forever present Mike Baker. Each of these players dominated from their respective nose guard and linebacker positions. Newcomers Kraa Davison and Kenton Duncan were each very productive in their first game. Davison had an interception and Duncan picked up a fumbled Minutemen kickoff and scored from 5 yards out.

The B.E.A.R.S. will have next weekend off as they prepare for their home opener, May 14th, against the Jonathan Beasley led Wichita Aviators.

Koyotes hang on to win season opener over Bears, 41-33
By Dave Skretta
The Capitol-Journal

Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. quarterback
Troy Travis has made the B.E.A.R.S
immediate APFL title contenders.
Despite an unfamiliar opponent for the Kansas Koyotes, one thing was very familiar -- a win.

It didn't come easily against league newcomer Nebraska, though. The Koyotes led just 35-33 with 3:40 to go before Chris Coffin hit Justin Wrecke for a 14-yard touchdown to make the score 41-33.

After kicker Bruno Vasconcelos missed the extra point, which would have put the game out of reach, Nebraska marched inside the Kansas 10-yard line with less than a minute remaining.

But quarterback Troy Travis was flushed from the pocket and driven out of bounds at the 5-yard line to preserve the win in the closest game in Koyotes history.

"We knew coming in it wouldn't be easy," Kansas coach Warren Seitz said. "A lot of those guys are Division II players and better, just like we have. It didn't surprise us.

"A lot of these guys haven't been under pressure like this for a while. They had to step up and I thought they did a good job of that."

Coffin threw for 122 yards and five touchdowns for Kansas, which has yet to lose en route to back-to-back league titles. Three of those TDs went to Wrecke, who finished with five catches for 61 yards.

"It was a lot tougher, but anything that's worth something shouldn't be easy," Coffin said. "We'd much rather prove ourselves."

While a newcomer to the American Professional Football League, Nebraska isn't an entirely new team. The Bears have played outdoor football for several seasons.

Still, the adaptation to indoor football caused problems all game long. Receivers dropped several passes and the team committed 16 penalties for more than 100 yards, including several illegal defenses.

"It was first-game jitters and not knowing the rules, things like that," Nebraska coach Don Moore said. "We made a lot of mistakes on our side."

Fletcher Smith caught seven passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns to lead Nebraska. Travis finished with 188 yards passing and 18 yards rushing.

Kansas returns to action on Saturday when it faces another league newcomer, the Wichita Aviators, who are quarterbacked by former Kansas State Wildcat Jonathan Beasley.

Seitz said it will be another stiff challenge, made even tougher by the loss of receiver Travis Stallbaumer, who was carted off the field after hurting his left leg in the second quarter.

"They're going to be a very good team," Seitz said. "But this is what we wanted out of the new teams in our league."

Former Beef star Travis signs with B.E.A.R.S.
The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. indoor professional football announced this afternoon that former Omaha Beef quarterback, Troy Travis, has signed a contract to play for the B.E.A.R.S. in the upcoming American Professional Football League season.

Troy played at Middle Tennessee State University after starring as a two-sport all-state athlete at Omaha Benson High. The 6'3" 255 lb. Travis was the starting quarterback for 6 seasons with the Omaha Beef, garnering IPFL MVP honors in 2002 and 2003. According to B.E.A.R.S. owner Mike Carter, "Troy's signing immediately gives us the top indoor professional football quarterback to ever play the game in Omaha, Nebraska. This is a tremendous catch for our organization and puts us in a position to be very very competitive. As I have said all along, we want to win a championship in our very first season and having Troy at quarterback puts us in a much better position to do this. However, we still must get it done on the field, and there is plenty of work ahead of us."

Asked if there would be any other player signings that will be shockers like Troy Travis, Mike Carter stated, "We've got a couple other impact players that we may be signing within the next few days." Stay tuned.

B.E.A.R.S. hold press conference

The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. held their press conference yesterday, with owner Mike Carter announcing plans to play a 10 game American Professional Football League schedule this season. The B.E.A.R.S. will play five home games and 5 away games, with the schedules being released on Monday, March 7th. Four of the home games will be played at the wonderful Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. One of the "home games" will be played in St. Paul, MN at the fabulous Xcel Energy Center, which has a seating capacity of 19,000 for indoor football. The Xcel Energy Center is also home to the NHL's Minnesota Wild. The game in St. Paul will serve as the catalyst for expansion plans into that area next season by B.E.A.R.S. owner Mike Carter and the APFL.

The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. had previously announced plans to play its home games at the Qwest Center in Omaha. According to owner Mike Carter, "From a business perspective, the deal could not be finished due to a lack of a commitment from sponsors that were critical to making it happen. We are very happy to be at the Mid-America Center, and intend to bring a championship football team to that building in our very first year of operating there. That would be historical from the standpoint that we would be the first indoor football team from Omaha to win a championship of any kind."

Ex-Dolphin among signees
The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. signed 32 players to contracts after last night's practice session. Among the players signed was former Miami Dolphin player Lamain Rucker. His impact at yesterday's practice was immediately felt.

According to GM Julian Carter, "This kid is a mean and nasty load to deal with, and whomever thinks that we won't be putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season is in for a tremendous surprise. Oh, yes, there will be plenty of heat. There is no doubt in my mind that Lamain is young and talented enough to get himself back into the NFL, so his stay with us might not be beyond this season. Lamain, along with Jack Conley and Matt Kluver give us what I feel will be the three best linemen in the APFL--bar none. They can dominate a game on either side of the ball."

Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. owner Mike Carter has scheduled a press conference to announce the team for Wednesday, March 2nd, at 10:00 AM, at the Mid-America Center Arena (located next to Bluffs Run).

Disciplined Bears triumph
Omaha, Nebraska -- Julian Carter, the Omaha Bears head coach, said he won't be satisfied with his team's season until it brings a championship to Omaha.

He sounded more than satisfied after the Bears avenged a 33-20 loss to the Northwest Iowa Bruisers with a 56-6 drubbing on Saturday.

"Last time we played, the bigger, stronger, faster team didn't win," Carter said. "The more disciplined one did. Tonight we were disciplined and got physical from the start."

And the Bears didn't take long to start the rout. Anthony Lee took the first play from scrimmage 65 yards, beginning the race to a 26-0 lead at the half. The tailback finished with 220 yards.

Quarterback Tommie Williams connected with 3 receivers for touchdowns, and on defense, lineback Chris Catron followed the ball all night, finishing the game with a fumble recovery and an interception.

Carter said the Bears, the five-time North Central Division champions, need to keep performing down the stretch.

"We need to just step it up in the playoffs," Carter said. "We played big tonight offensively and defensively. We played at a championship level."

The Lawdawgs went up 7-0 on the first play of the game when Carl Hyte returned the kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown.

The Bears responded with a pair of Anthony Lee 3-yard touchdown runs and Chuck Wright's 46-yard TD strike to Lonny Brazile in the opening quarter.

Mike Parks added a 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the Bears (4-1). The Lawdawgs drop to 2-2.

The Bears return to action Aug. 7 against the Kansas City Jazz at Omaha Benson High School.

Bears are 4-time division champs!!!

SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA -- The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. defeated the Dakota Lawdawgs Saturday night in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in a North Central Division showdown, 35-29. This regular-season ending victory gave the Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. their 4th consecutive division championship in as many years, and will allow them to advance into the North American Football League playoffs beginning September 27th.

The location of and opponent for the 1st round playoff game will not be determined for another one or two weeks due to teams all around the country finishing up their schedules.

Offensively, the B.E.A.R.S. were led by Anthony "Rock" Lee, Tommie "Mr. Everything" Williams, and a very dominant and punishing performance by the entire offensive line.

Lee ended up the day with 119 yards on 18 carries, 4 pass receptions for 90 yards, and 3 touchdowns (2 receiving, 1 rushing). Lee's performance put him over the 1,000 yard rushing plateau, giving him a total of 1,069 yards for the season. Lee becomes the very 1st B.E.A.R.S. running back to break this barrier.
Williams completed 12 out of 21 passes for 195 yards and 3 touchdowns. Williams was spectacular on many of his passes, eluding the pass rush and slipping out of tackle after tackle and still completing passes to the open receivers down field. In addition to Lee's 4 catches for 90 yards, Ryan Kauffman had 3 catches for 51 yards, Bishop Arvin had 3 catches for 35 yards, and Fletcher Smith had 2 catches for 19 yards.

Defensively, the B.E.A.R.S. front line was led by Immanuel Odongkara, Gabe Hansen, Sean Smith, and Corey Sykes (2 sacks). Arthur Seuss with 5 tackles (3 unassited/2 assisted) and Kraa Davison with 6 tackles (4 unassisted/2 assisted) led the B.E.A.R.S. on defense.

Eric Smith again showed a tremendous nose for the ball as he had 2 key interceptions during the game, one of which led to a B.E.A.R.S. touchdown. To start the day of scoring, Tony Mackey fell on a bad snap to the Lawdawg punter in their end zone.

The B.E.A.R.S. now anxiously await word from the league offices in New York as to the location of and opponent for the 1st round of playoffs beginning September 27th.

History repeats as Bears fall to the Jazz
KANSAS CITY, KANSAS -- Last year the Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. and the Kansas City Jazz split their home and away series with each team winning its game at home. Last night in Kansas City the story was no different with the Jazz avenging an earlier loss this season in Omaha to the B.E.A.R.S. with a 26-21 upset victory at home.

The B.E.A.R.S. started fast with a Kraa Davison block of a Jazz field goal attempt and Eric Smith scooping the ball up and racing 70 yards for the B.E.A.R.S. 1st score, making it 7-0.

The always-tough Jazz battled back with a touchdown and field goal to go ahead at the half 10-7. The B.E.A.R.S. defense gave up 2 more touchdowns and a field goal in the 2nd half and struggled throughout the 2nd half in corraling Jazz quarterback Chris Coffin.

Bears quarterback Tommie Williams led a 4th quarter comeback attempt, throwing 2 touchdown passes to Ryan Kauffman. However, there simply was not enough time on the clock and the Bears came up short, 26-21.

The B.E.A.R.S. are now faced with a must-win game in order to make the playoffs when they travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, September 6th, to play the Dakota Lawdawgs in a game that will also decide the division title if the Bears win.

Anthony "Rock" Lee nears milestone
  • NAFL's 2nd leading rusher
  • 891 total rushing yards
  • 150 attempts
  • 5.94 yards per carry
  • 9 rushing touchdowns
OMAHA, NEBRASKA -- The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. have been in existence for 4 years counting this current season. In spite of the talented pool of running backs that have worn the blue and orange colors of the B.E.A.R.S. in past seasons, there has never been a 1,000 yard rusher in its stables. The B.E.A.R.S. have used a tandem of runners in past years that would have totaled 1,000 yards collectively for a particular season. Never though, has there been a single runner who has approached this mark alone. Enter, Anthony Lee.

Lee is enjoying his finest season to date with the B.E.A.R.S. totaling 891 yards after only 8 regular season games, ranking him as the 2nd leading rusher in the entire NAFL. The B.E.A.R.S. have 2 regular season games to go against its toughest opponents to date, and Lee needs just 109 yards to accomplish this tremendous fete. Anthony is the type of player that would quickly credit his teammates if he is successful in getting 1,000 yards. Everyone associated with the Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. is pulling for him. Stay tuned!!

Williams steals show, Bears win 32-6
  • Completed 21 out of 29 passes
  • 301 total passing yards
  • Threw 4 touchdown passes
  • Completed passes to 8 receivers
NORFOLK, NEBRASKA -- The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. were led by "all-everything" quarterback Tommie Williams in defeating the Norfolk Thunderbirds 32-6 in the North American Football League's North Central Division last night. Tommie completed 21 out of 29 passes for a total of 301 yards and 4 touchdowns. Anthony Lee rushed for 89 yards in this game, but it was the passing game that destroyed Norfolk.

Wide receivers Ryan Kauffman and Fletcher Smith led the B.E.A.R.S. receivers with 5 catches apiece. Kauffman had 5 catches for 95 yards, while Smith had 5 catches for 76 yards including one for a 38 yard touchdown. Touchdown passes were also thrown to running back Shawn Jones (15 yards), wide receiver Lonnie Brazille (17 yards), and tight-end Mike Wladischkin (10 yards). Kicker Mike Parks kicked a 38 yard field goal for the B.E.A.R.S. 1st points of the game.
William's performance was by far the best quarterback performance for the B.E.A.R.S. this season. Tommie's ability to scramble to avoid the sack and yet still locate his receivers downfield was often utilized successfully throughout the game. Additionally, Tommie also spread his passes around to 8 different B.E.A.R.S. receivers which prevented the Thunderbirds from keying on any particular receiver.

Defensively, aside from a coverage mistake, the B.E.A.R.S. were dominate throughout the game. It was an overall team effort defensively. However, key plays were made by Kraa Davison, Arthur Seuss, and J.R. Morrison.

The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. will now prepare to face the Kansas City Jazz in Kansas City next weekend, in a game that could clinch a share of the North Central Division title for the B.E.A.R.S.

Bears make it 8 straight against Lincoln
LINCOLN, NE --- The Nebraska Bears continued their 4-year historical dominance over the Lincoln Renegade football team by winning their 8th consecutive game against Lincoln in as many games, 24-14.

Coach Julian Carter told his team again before Saturday night's contest, "I will not be the first coach to lose to Lincoln", and he again proved his prophecy to be correct.

After jumping out to a 17-0 lead, the Bears opened the 3rd quarter with 4 consecutive fumbles which allowed Lincoln to get back into the game with 2 quick scores, making the game 17-14. However, once the Bears offense settled in, and the defense exerted its dominance once again, the Bears managed to regain control of the game winning 24-14.

Detailed summary will be forthcoming.

Bears owner delivers proposal to Beef
OMAHA, NE --- Bears owner Mike Carter hand-carried a proposal today to the Omaha Beef General Manager Jon Bostick that challenges the Omaha Beef to play the Nebraska B.E.A.R.S. in an exhibition game on August 30th---winner-take-all.

In a Omaha World-Herald article dated July 19th (see article below), Bostick stated that he wasn't aware of the proposed matchup, but that he would talk to the Bears if approached. Mike Carter stated, "I had been speaking directly to the Beef players for several months in reference to a proposed game, and I assumed that they were speaking to Beef management about it. Under previous ownership, the Beef management has been opposed to playing the game, so I thought that if their own players would push it that it might have a greater chance of happening".
Carter also stated, "Our organization has a lot of respect for the quality of players and coaches with the Omaha Beef. However, at the same time, we feel as though we have not been given the respect from the media and business communities that we deserve, and often-times are either directly told or treated as if our players do not have the same skill level and dedication toward the game as the Omaha Beef players do. Our organization knows this definitely is not true. So, playing this game would give us a chance to demonstrate this."
In the Omaha World-Herald story of July 19th (see article below), Omaha Beef quarterback Troy Travis is quoted as saying that the Beef would "kill them", most of the Bears players tried out for the Beef and got cut, and also that the Beef might even spot the Bears by 30 points.

None of these comments rested well with the Nebraska Bears players; however, owner Mike Carter laughs about it and says, "Troy is a great competitor, a tremendous quarterback, and truly believes in his team. He would definitely be one of several Beef players that would give us fits. However, deep down inside, Troy and his teammates are not 100% sure they can win, or they would have played the game by now, especially with the winner-take-all offer."
Carter believes this game would draw a good amount of interest from the fans and would truly determine who is the best team in Omaha and the state of Nebraska. "There is nothing left to do but play the game. All the talk can be settled in one afternoon or evening. I hope that the Beef will accept this challenge, they might even find some players on our side of the field that can help them win a title next season," Carter said.

Stay tuned.
