SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Football and cheerleading are our most popular sports and, therefore, have the largest enrollment. During this season all youths attend a weekly Social Enhancement session at which various citizens speak about their particular profession or avocation, as well as present topics and issues that relate to our members. These sessions are held at the Skinner Magnet Elementary School, whose principal is the very dynamic and community-minded Mr. Elmer Crumbley. Examples of speakers are a state senator, a medical doctor, a computer specialist, husband-and-wife school principals working as a team, a television anchor, a city counsel representative, a movie star, and many others. Our most "famous" speaker was Evelyn Ashford, the world-renowned track star, who electrified the youths by her very presence.
Youths are encouraged to take notes at these sessions and to ask questions at the end. Sometimes individual coaches/mentors may require them to write a short report on what they heard.
We all know a picture is worth a "million" words and the children see these speakers as "heroes" whose success can be duplicated by them if they do the right things. As the popular song I Believe I Can Fly states, "...if I can see it, I can be it", the North Omaha B.E.A.R.S. Program believes that by placing quality individuals in front of our children makes a definite impact. No matter what a speaker's main theme is, he/she always ends by admonishing the children to listen to their parents and teachers, to behave at home and at school, to stay in school, and to stay away from alcohol and other drugs, tobacco, violence and gangs.
